Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most widely used treatment for hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid. In order to restore enough thyroid hormone levels, patients with hypothyroidism must take thyroid hormone replacement medication such as Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid). It is a synthetic form of thyroid hormone and the first drug of choice for the treatment of hypothyroidism. For overactive thyroid, one needs a different drug called Methimazole.
